Since 1107, Stow has been renowned for hosting markets and fairs. Although many types of goods were traditionally traded, the high quality of locally farmed sheep positioned the town at the centre of the region’s wool trade. Daniel Defoe even recorded that 20,000 sheep changed hands at one 18th-century fair!
